This Week in VMI Athletics - Nov. 30

Well, we certainly hope everyone had an excellent and restful Thanksgiving! The Christmas trees are up, the holiday hustle and bustle is ready to go and you can almost hear Judy Garland (who introduced the song in the 1944 movie, "Meet Me in St. Louis") singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" in the background...

VMI basketball dropped a 115-95 decision to UNC Wilmington in its lone game last week. The Keydets fell behind big early, but battled back to make a game of it in the second half before UNCW pulled away late for the 20-point win. Coach Baucom continues to tweet that the Keydets are young and a "work in progress", so we can only await to see the start of Big South play, which begins this week in fact.

Coastal comes into Cameron Hall on Dec. 3 in a game that will be regionally televised (more on that in the couple of days via Twitter and the game notes), and thus, will begin much later than normal (9 p.m.)...Following the Chanticleers' visit, Charleston Southern pops in on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start, before the Keydets' get back to out-of-conference action next week. That game against the Bucs is the final game at Cameron until 2010, as the Hall will be empty between Dec. 5 and Jan. 2.

Before ALL that can happen though, VMI hosts Lynchburg College tonight at 7 p.m. Come on out if you're in the area!

Basketball's not the only sport going on right now, as track and field opens up this week with a meet at Liberty. It is believed the Liberty Kickoff indoor meet may be the first-such indoor meet in the country this season, and VMI will be a part of it Wednesday and Thursday in Lynchburg.

A full preview of the two-day competition will be posted, likely Tuesday, while a complete indoor season preview should be expected in mid-to-late December as part of the track and field media guide. A preliminary time schedule for this week's meet is available here.

Finally, the Keydets placed seven on the Big South's All-Conference teams last week, including Tim Maypray, George Handler and Marc Ray on the conference's first team. Check out the release here.

That'll do it for this week...Hope to see you tonight for basketball and here next week for more news from around VMI Post.
